This project intends to provide front-line health care providers in South Africa training and support on practical ways they can improve treatment for their patients with severe mental health issues.
The goal is to provide continuing medical education to health care providers, including mental health prescribers and therapists, and front line medical professionals that might not focus on mental health, to help them to assess, diagnose and treat mental disorders. Specific areas of action might include
Training mental health providers on how to recognize what PTSD is and the treatments available.
Educate prescribers on the medications that are available now
Work through and with psychiatric prescribers in South Africa to retain these prescription goals and education
Working with primary care providers, including nurses, where they are the first line in recognizing mental health disorders.
Possibly working with the pharmaceutical companies to obtain samples of medications for underserved areas and clinics in South Africa
